Making Daily Scrum Events Effective

Daily Scrum Events are short events that are indispensable for many teams and usually allow the work to begin and the team to synchronize. At the event, each team member answers the questions: What did I do yesterday, what will I do today, are there any obstacles in front of me.

Sometimes it can be hard to think about yesterday and today and put them into sentences in the morning hours. As a solution, I designed a Trello board and kept my work done during the day in sync with the board.

The board contains the following lists:

  • Today Plan: What will I do today?
  • Impediment: Is there any impediment?
  • Today: What did I do today?
  • Tomorrow: What will I do tomorrow?

Daily Scrum Events

I only use the following three lists in Daily Scrum Events. In this way, I do not have to think about the answers to questions such as what I did yesterday and what I will do today.

  • Today Plan: What will I do today?
  • Impediment: Is there any impediment?

Daily Routine

I use the following four lists from the board in my daily routine.

  • Impediment: Is there any impediment?
  • Today: What did I do today?
  • Tomorrow: What will I do tomorrow?

I drag the tasks completed during the day to the Today list. If I had a problem and couldn’t progress that task, I moved it to the Impediment list. I move all the tasks that I plan to do tomorrow to the Tomorrow list.

Scheduled Commands

The scheduled Butler command can be used for all the tasks that I will describe in the next Daily Scrum Event. It does the following before the event:

  • Move all cards from Tomorrow list to Today Plan list
Scheduled Event Preparation Command — Butler
Board with Event Preparation Command applied

So we’re ready for the next day’s event. After joining the event via the updated board, the following scheduled command can be used to archive the cards in the Yesterday list so that we don’t get confused by what we did yesterday when we start work.

Scheduled Post-Event Command — Butler
Board with Post-Event Command applied
